Course Description: This course examines global, economic, organizational, legal, political, and technological contexts in which advanced nursing practice occurs. Students acquire knowledge and skills necessary for understanding the evolution of health services organizations, the financing of healthcare, and the relationships among socioeconomic systems influencing healthcare and nursing practice. The impacts of macrosystems on the distribution, acquisition, and use of financial and economic principles in the delivery of healthcare services are analyzed. Course Objectives: Through discussion and completion of assigned activities, the student will be able to: 1. Compare the development of healthcare systems in the United States and other selected countries. 2. Use financial and economic principles to analyze healthcare markets and related cost, access, and quality issues. 3. Analyze social, political, cultural, and economic forces that affect the organization and delivery of healthcare services; 4. Apply financial principles, including cost-benefit analysis, basic budgeting, and cost analysis in planning health service delivery; 5. Utilize complexity science and systems theory in analyzing healthcare, designing, delivering, and evaluating care; 6. Identify the scientific and ethical issues associated with the use of new technologies in healthcare delivery.
