Course Description: This course prepares nurse leaders and practitioners to use techniques for financial analysis and decision making for patient care programs across the health care continuum. The course focuses upon efficient and effective management of resources for delivery of quality health care services. Course Objectives: Through participation in discussions and assigned activities, the student will be able to: 1. Determine revenue sources of current customer bases and projections of future customer demands. 2. Survey the external forces impinging upon the organization’s financial position (with special emphasis on regulatory requirements) and relate those to the nature and scope of the organization’s financial obligations. 3. Describe sound and realistic organizational budget principles that integrate information from multiple sources. 4. Identify principles of financial management and cost accounting that optimize the efficient and effective use of limited resources for the delivery of healthcare across the continuum of services. 5. Incorporate recognized financial concepts and principles into an operating budget which considers resource requirements for maximum productivity and cost-effective, high quality healthcare. 6. Assess the financial performance of a selected setting, analyze variances, and design a plan to control variation.
