Course Description: This course focuses on processes of knowledge development in nursing, including traditional and non-traditional methods. Application of a selected theory development method to a student-selected nursing phenomenon is required.

Other considerations: By the end of this course, the learner will be able to: (1) Critically analyze the evolution of theoretical thinking in nursing, including the influence of philosophies of science and theories from adjunctive disciplines. (2) Critique and apply different methods of theory analysis and evaluation. (3) Analyze, critique and apply different methods of theory development in nursing. (4) Develop a middle range theoretical knowledge structure (e.g., concept analysis, theory reformulation) related to a selected nursing phenomenon in the student’s area of interest.
