Pre-requisites: Graduate Student - This is one of two classes. NURS 7203 Principles of Quantitative Inquiry II is offered during the Fall semesters.

Course Description: OVERVIEW OF CONTENT: This is a core program course for the nursing PhD program. This course is the first in a two-part sequence that teaches qualitative inquiry as the integration of conceptual, theoretical and methodological principles and assumptions into a coherent framework for research, and the application of these, via specific research methods, to the process of qualitative data production and analysis. At the completion of the two course sequence, students will have in-depth knowledge about major qualitative methodologies (ethnography, phenomenology, and grounded theory) and the appropriate use of each; they will be able to identify appropriate questions, data collection and analysis strategies within each methodology, and the differences in the products. Other qualitative methods will be introduced and explored, as determined by faculty expertise and student interest. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the semester, students should be able to – 1. Explain qualitative epistemology a. Induction, deduction, abduction b. Researcher stance 2. Differentiate the descriptive and interpretive possibilities in qualitative methodologies, such as qualitative content description, ethnography, interpretive description, phenomenology, grounded theory, photovoice, narrative analysis, discourse analysis and others. 3. Develop qualitative research aims and questions. 4. Propose data collection strategies congruent with major qualitative methodologies and mixed or multi methods studies. 5. Predict and evaluate research products by analyzing the congruence of the qualitative research question, data collection methods, and analysis strategies.
