Course Description: This course is designed to give the primary care nurse practitioner and other graduate nursing students a foundation in medical genetics. The basics of genetics, common genetic disorders and genetic testing are discussed. The application of this knowledge to counsel individuals at risk for genetic disorders is emphasized through the use of case studies. Ethical, legal and clinical practice issues and perspectives of primary care counseling in genetics are addressed.
