Course Description: ATTENTION - THIS IS A MASTERS LEVEL COURSE. OVERVIEW OF CONTENT: This course is designed to provide the student the opportunity to analyze the current delivery system of services and programs for older adults at the national, state and local levels. Students will learn about local services and programs, identify service gaps, and determine if services are prepared to meet the increasing demands of a rapidly aging population. Students will learn about current concepts in health and social policy reform and will be asked to evaluate current public policy recommendations. OBJECTIVES: The student will – 1. Become knowledgeable of the history of social policies for older adults in the United States as they relate to services and programs. 2. Be familiar with major public health and social service programs available to older adults in the United States and provided locally - including related funding sources, eligibility criteria, and public policies. 3. Students will know how to find information about different services in different locations and will recognize how older adults utilize and understand those services. 4. Have an understanding of the current trends in reform of the existing system of aging programs and the political, societal and economic changes driving the evolution of these trends. Based on this understanding, students will anticipate and identify how programs may need to change in the future. 5. Meet professionals in various fields providing services and programs to older adults and be more aware of career opportunities in the aging sector. 6. Critically evaluate the access, outcomes and quality of the delivery system for health and social services to older adults.
