Course Description: Prepares the student for proficiency in the development of quality improvement initiatives for sustainable practice change. The student will assess evidence as it relates to cost, quality, and health outcomes (individual and aggregate) within the context of current regional and national healthcare trends and emerging issues. Emphasis will be on the methods and tools utilized in performance improvement and patient safety. The student will develop a quality or safety initiative using a systems approach.

Other considerations: Upon completion of this course the student will: 1. Examine national models of quality improvement (e.g. NCQA models, the Triple Aim and QSEN). 2. Evaluate health care indicators for select patient populations and debate their relevance and ethical implications for healthcare delivery. 3. Identify a clinical issue of interest in the context of quality improvement. 4. Perform a systems assessment related to the clinical issue with attention to cost, quality and health outcomes. 5. Identify quality improvement strategies that promote sustainable practice change.
