Course Description: OVERVIEW OF CONTENT: This course is designed to examine the current socio-political, economic, and technologic context for advancing knowledge. Participants will examine key public health problems and their relationship to the national research agenda and priorities. Participants will evaluate major paradigm shifts in society and discuss the influence of such shifts on the advancement of science including funding for research. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the semester, students should be able to – 1. Construct a personal research/scholarly agenda relative to society, health professions, and knowledge advancement. 2. Prepare a written statement of their research problem and its significance. 3. Analyze the influence of shifting paradigms on how scientists are advancing knowledge to improve health and health care.
