Course Description: OVERVIEW OF CONTENT: Excellence in healthcare requires understanding of economic, social, and political forces in organizations that impact policy and decision-making in health care delivery systems related to quality improvement and clinical outcomes. This course focuses on theory, methods, and tools of quality improvement by patient care leaders and health services administrators to improve patient care and outcomes, reduce waste, and lower costs. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the semester, students should be able to – 1. Articulate the patient care leader role in maximizing the efficient and effective use of human, material, and financial planning resources. 2. Demonstrate utilization of clinical data and quality improvement tools to assess a clinical outcome issue. 3. Develop a quality improvement project plan, using data and appropriate tools, to address an issue in the clinical setting. 4. Articulate decision-making process for tools/methods selection for quality improvement management. 5. Analyze the social, legal and ethical implications related to quality care, improvement, and management. 6. Integrate concepts of quality improvement programs into the role and functions of patient care leaders and health services administration to promote team development and facilitate provision of high quality health care.
